COMPANY HISTORY

In it's inaugural season alone, Theatre C received critical acclaim on multiple levels. Theatre C’s commission of dancer and choreographer Jesse Zaritt to create a dance-theatre piece for the soloNOVA Arts Festival, presented by the terraNOVA Collective, was extended and nominated for three New York Innovative Theatre Awards. Jesse Zaritt's BINDING won awards in all three categories for which it was nominated: Best Choreography/Movement, Best Solo-Performer, and Best Performance Art Production. BINDING was also extended by popular demand, the only production to be extended in the soloNOVA Arts Festival. Elia Kourlas for The New York Times writes “Virile and flamboyant … [Zaritt's] long line is magnified to powerful effect" and in a feature article for The Forward, Christopher Atamian writes "Rare is the performer who, like Zaritt, can be simultaneously physical and intellectual, and sensual and cerebral." The experimental production design also received critical praise from E. Michael Lockley for NY Theatre saying “The aural elements of the piece are mesmerizing."

Following the successful production of BINDING, Theatre C collaborated with ReVision Theatre to associate produce a revival of Pete Townshend’s The Who’s TOMMY presented in the old Carousel House in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Carlos Armesto directed and the production received rave reviews and was extended by popular demand. Peter Filichia for The Star-Ledger writes “a winning production...eye-arresting...excellent” and Alex Biese for MetroMix raves that this is "the 'Tommy' I've been waiting for!" In addition, Mr. Armesto was honored with “Best Director of a Musical” in The Star-Ledger’s 2010 New Jersey Tony and Obie Awards.  Theatre C also co-produced a reimagining of the critically acclaimed Spring Awakening for its regional premier in Asbury Park, NJ with ReVision Theatre.

Theatre C turned again to integrating dance in a less traditional manner. Theatre C’s production of Kyoung H. Park’s disOriented, directed by Carlos Armesto with choreography by Elisabetta Spuria, received The Princess Grace Foundation’s coveted Special Project Grant award of $20,000. disOriented, which integrated a mixture of traditional and modern Korean fan dance to advance the story of a full length play, ran for three weeks in February 2011 at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater at Playwrights’ Horizons. Weston Clay of Theatre Is Easy calls disOriented “Compelling ... Complex ... Clever” and the production received an Editor’s Pick on FlavorPill with Patricia Contino highlighting the writing of the play saying that “disOriented's long-distance and generational conflicts are universal.”

After receiving a Lower Manhattan Cultural Council grant, Theatre C commissioned immersive performance artists Calla Videt and the Kuperman Brothers to create a free audio adventure, Please Do [Not] Disturb, which maxed out reservations and extended its limited run by popular demand on the streets of NYC. In the 2015/16 season, Artistic Director Carlos Armesto is currently developing  Martian Chronicles, Cotton Candy & Cocaine and On the Eve.
